Fireplace facade by MarkNewman Fireplace facade by MarkNewman
This is a bas Relief sculpture I recently finished that will be cast in bronze as a fireplace facade for George Lucas. This was designed by Erik Tiemens , a concept artist that was working for Lucas film. This will be installed onto a fireplace in GL's bedroom. It will be surrounded by a hand carved white marble art nouveau mantel that he purchased at an auction in Paris some time ago.
This is sculpted in Chavant CM 50, a hard oil based clay.

OMG-- that looks so good-- chocolate bar good. Resists urge to take a bite. And it kills to think that you may have to destroy it... and start all over again.

You mentioned that you will get paid again, so its all good, and it is... but someone who puts so much artistry in their work makes it very evident that you don't do this for the money... sure people gotta eat and rent and stuff, but wow... love your work!!

brilliant stuff, Mark!!

Art Nouveau is one of my favorite movements in art and this is a fine example of the period. The whiplash forms and details around the opening are beautiful as are the poppies. It is such a shame that these may have to be reworked.

That's an awesome project to work on!! You've done a beautiful job with the art nouveau design. It's clean and flowing. It would definitely be a shame if he decides to change it, but I'm sure you'd rise to the occasion and make an even better piece the second time around. Will you get be part of the install team? or at least visit his home?

Cheers!!

George Lucas as a client...you lucky dog you. Of course wanting a rework may have you cursing a bit, but like you said more money for the pocket.

I really like the simplicity of this design. I would have expected art nouveau to be some what more..."busy" though. However, the lack of ...really makes for an elegant piece.

As always executed in the traditional top notch Newman craftsmanship!!!

Looks like something one might expect to see in Rivendale.

Shame to have to dismantle it, no pun intended.

George Lucas, huh? Cool.. Maybe you can drop a couple of fifty pound hints that he might be wise to find someone else to write his dialog for any future Sci-Fi movies he might have planned... *grin*

Looks like it'd be a great addition to any home. Like mine, perhaps? ;) Must be nice to be able to afford hand-carved marble fireplaces. That's gonna cost a fortune!

Beautiful, beautiful work. I've been looking through your gallery and finding artworks that I would be scared to try and draw, never mind try and do in a three dimensional format like scuplture. I've TRIED sculpture; my wolf was mistaken for a cow. I have nothing but admiration for an incredible talent and collection that showcases that talent!

Congrats on the commission from Mr. Lucas, that's amazing! For some reason I don't think I ever would have pegged him as an Art Nouveau lover. *grins*

I really hope you won't have to scrap this one and start over, it's so beautiful!

I hope you post pics. of it again once you've cast it in bronze. I bet it'll be so gorgeous.:D

Beautiful! it's nice to see a large piece like this that isn't overwhelmed by too much fussy decoration. The smooth open-ness will look stunning in a large room (and since we're talking about George Lucas I'm going to assume the rooms are bigger than the average house). It would be nice to see the finished work with the mantle piece it was designed for.

... and you're going to hate me, I know how hard it is to put all that work into something and then have the client change their mind, but I agree that it would look better with a slightly wider opening. At the moment it looks a little too 'square', it distracts from the naturalism of the rest of the design. Personally, I'd widen the opening and make the dip in the center a little deeper. I'd also change the poppys to a more symmetrical design to match the symmetry of the rest of it. That one upturned flower throws the whole thing off balance, if another small flower (maybe a bud?) was placed below it, it would flow better with the rest of the piece. That's just me though, and I'd be the last to claim I'm a design guru ;P . The actual sculpting is phenomenal, just like all your other work.

What will happen to this one if they decide to change it? Will it be completely scrapped or will you work the modifications into it?

This design flows very nicely with the marble mantel that will surround it. The whole concept design was mocked up by concept artist Erik Tiemens and then approved by Mr. Lucas way before I was called in to execute the sculpture.
Sad to say that this sculpt, if he does decide to widen the fire box, will probably be scrapped.

You could always bronze cast it still and auction it off as the sister piece to the "Lucas Fireplace Commission" ;)

Or would something like that not be very cost effective?

Yeah, fancy client! I know next to nothing about Lucas, but I was under the impression that he didn't have a particularly extravagant lifestyle.

Beautifully done, by the way — how much work did that constitute, if you don't mind the prying?
